Garden Sessions
Summer is coming to an end, and the pause of the past few months, with no networking, no book printing, no open calls or openings, suddenly created space for other things I used to enjoy but had stopped doing because there was never enough time.
Over the past few months, I’ve redecorated a bedroom, tended to and partly reshaped the garden, and lately there has even been some space to work on my fear of driving. All of this has actually felt really good. I had forgotten how good it feels to improve things and to give attention to the place around me. I have also continued taking photographs, as I mentioned before, but not necessarily with the intention of making something or starting a new project. They simply emerged.
After looking at the work with a few good friends from the field and my co-curator Ringel Goslinga, we decided to show it as a work in progress at the Engelbewaarder in Amsterdam. It will be on view from 30 September. Unfortunately, I’m not yet able to organise an opening, but you can visit it freely. And if I’m able to and my health allows it, perhaps we can meet there for a coffee sometime.

About the work
Garden Sessions emerges from a period of disorientation.
What begins as a personal, almost hidden process becomes a way of moving through the days during a mental and physical crisis.
With the backyard as a refuge, a bounded space where time slows down and some sense of grounding becomes possible, I begin to look around me. I do not make these images with the intention of showing them. They arise as moments of orientation, as attempts to remain present when presence is not self-evident.
Photography becomes a way of staying in contact with what is still there. Not a finished narrative, but a temporary form of holding. Perhaps making these images is not an attempt to fix something in place, but to not disappear, if only for a moment.
